Things to avoid applying under your eyes

Our under-eye area is meant to be extremely sensitive, and this is why everyone should be thinking many times before applying skin care products. Following a skincare routine is something we all tend to adopt with time and realizing the importance of the same. Some of you might even have multiple products or ingredients on the list to include in the skincare routine. Even if your latest skincare trial has passed the patch test, here are some ingredients you should be avoiding to apply under your eyes. 

Ingredients to avoid applying under your eyes

1. Retinoid

We all that our anti-ageing routine is incomplete without retinoid, but in some it could negatively impact sensitive skin. For instance, people who are applying retinoid for wrinkles and fine lines should use it cautiously as it makes the delicate skin around the eyes dry and dull.

2. Salicylic acid

This popular acne fighting ingredient – Salicylic acid works as a great exfoliate on the skin and unclogs pores. However, it could be extremely harsh for the under-eye area as the skin is quite delicate. On applying, some may experience dryness and irritation down the eye.

3. Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a super strong oxidizing agent which can lighten hair or disinfect wounds. Using this strong agent on the skin, especially on the under-eye skin can lead to irritation, redness, and stinging.

4. Fragrance

We all are fond of fragrance based products and we usually incorporate wonderful smelling cosmetics and products into the skincare routine. However, it can lead to tremendous irritation under the eyes as the skin is sensitive. 

5. Essential oils

Essential oils are excellent to treat skin with therapeutic care. But, few of them know that it could have a harsh impact on the delicate under-eye area. Hence, it is highly advised to avoid essential oils, such as eucalyptus and peppermint around the eyes as they could start tingling and slowly affecting the delicate skin.

6. Alcohol

Using alcohol based skincare products on the skin can dry out and irritate the under-eye area while stripping away the natural moisture from the skin. 

Ways to take care of the under-eye area

It is crucial to take care of the under-eye skin by avoiding the use of harsh ingredients. You can use mild ingredients such as ceramides, and hyaluronic acid only after a patch test. It is highly advisable to avoid using skincare products under the eyes.

  • Instead switch to a gentle cleanser for your face and under-eye skin.
  • Always moisturize using a non-greasy and lightweight formula that includes sensitive skin friendly ingredients.
  • Apply sunscreen daily without giving it a miss, including the under-eye area.
  • Get enough sleep to prevent dark circles and puffiness.
  • Do not pull or rub skin rigorously below your eyes as it could lead to wrinkles and fine lines. 
  • Use an eye mask or cool compression to soothe inflammation and puffiness around the eyes.
